A few weeks ago, we reported that the Panerai Luminor "Pre-Vendôme" 5218-201A worn by Stallone in 1996's Daylight would be hitting the block as part of the Phillips New York "Racing Pulse" auction.
If you are new to the Panerai community you have probably heard the word Pre-Vendome and Vendome and wondered what they meant. The list below has the models that Panerai made and sold around from around 1993 to the time that Vendome group purchased Panerai around 1997.The PAM 5218-201/A is the so-called 'Pre-Vendome' logo model. Although a tough sell when available from new, it has risen to be one of the holy grails for many Panerai collectors. It is estimated that a little under 700 were produced in this configuration, with an additional 200 being reworked into Slytech models. The "Pre-Vendôme" watches ranged in size between 42mm and 44mm and primarily featured the classic trademark design "Luminor" case which is distinguished by the half-crescent shaped crown guard. These "Pre-Vendôme" watches were scaled-down versions of the original Rolex made Panerai watches, and paid homage to the earlier Panerai models.

This event is followed by a personalized series of watches known as the Luminor Slytech (Sly is Stallone’s nickname).The Panerai Luminor 5218-202/A is the Marina Militare version of the Pre-Vendome Luminor - a very sought-after watch. Approximately 140 pieces were produced in 1993-1994. At twelve, the text "Luminor Panerai' is found, while at six we find 'Marina Miltare'.Made in a series of 677 watches in 1993, this fine and very rare 5218-201/A is considered the Holy-Grail for Panerai collectors. It has been immaculately preserved by the owner, alongside three perfect OEM straps and all accessories and boxes included and intact.
