Panerai watch, PAMPR004 (1936) The Italian Navy commissions Panerai to develop the first prototypes of a watch that will evolve into the model now known as the “Radiomir.” The watches, water resistant to 30 meters, go into production two years later.
Panerai's pioneering Radiomir reference 2533 from 1936. With a massive 47mm case, multi-layered “sandwich” dial construction, and hand-winding pocket watch calibers, the “Radiomir”, as it came to be known for its radium-based luminescent material, finds its place in history as the first watch developed specifically for underwater use by divers. The new Panerai Reference 3646 was the first Rolex-made Panerai to have the trademark 3,6,9,12 Panerai Radiomir dial. (The prototype had solid bars at 12, 3, 6, and 9 and dots at the other hour markers.) The Complete Panerai Buying Guide: Every Current Model Line Explained. A guide to and brief history of one of the most notable dive watch manufacturers in the world and its timepieces. Henry Phillips. By Allen Farmelo and Zen Love. Published April 27, 2023.
The new Panerai Radiomir collection is a modern reimagining of the first Panerai dive watches originally commissioned for the Italian Navy. Originally protected as a military secret, the Radiomir returns with an extremely limited-edition modern upgrade It wasn’t until 20 years later, on the eve of the Second World War, that Panerai produced the very first prototype dive watches that were recognisable as Radiomir models for the frogmen. Panerai’s Radiomir 2533 saw the light of day in 1936, a product of the collaboration between Panerai, Rolex, and the Regia Marina (the Italian navy’s special diving forces). Panerai’s trademark crown guard system, which did much to seal the crown of the watch, came along on ref. 6152-1 in 1943.
In 2019 Panerai differentiated its watches by streamlining them into four key collections, the symbolic Luminor, the more graceful Luminor Due, the historic Radiomir and the robust Submersible. This welcome move helped distinguish the Submersible as Panerai’s professional dive watch collection. The origins of Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Panerai Radiomir and Luminor, and Seiko Prospex dive watches.Creator of the world’s first glowing dive watches for the Royal Italian Navy, Panerai watches have a devoted following of fans.
